Saturday's Powerball Draw Ends With No Winner

A $400 million Powerball jackpot went unclaimed Saturday, pushing the next jackpot to $425 million. There were no winning tickets sold in Saturday's drawing, which was the 22nd without a winner since November 2015, when there were two winners who split a $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot, Florida Lottery spokeswoman Shelly Gerteisen said Sunday morning. The next drawing will be at 10:59 p.m.

What is Powerball?

There is a misconception that one person will win half of Saturday’s $400 million draw. Instead, when no one correctly guesses all six numbers, each individual who holds a ticket wins a smaller prize. (For example, if you guess all six numbers correctly, but someone else has also guessed correctly and his/her ticket is picked first by lottery officials, you might get $250 instead of $200 million.) The next winning powerball draw will be on monday 29th october 2017 @ 21:00 ET.

How did it end?

Saturday night’s Powerball draw ended without a winner. The numbers drawn were 16, 19, 37, 44 and 58. The Powerball number was 9. Saturday’s top prize of $400 million will remain unclaimed until Monday night when another drawing takes place. While no one won Saturday’s jackpot, four people in Virginia matched all five numbers but not to win it because they purchased their tickets too late. This is called a power play and each player wins $1 million for correctly matching all five numbers. Virginia Lottery officials say these winners bought their tickets about 30 minutes before Saturday’s 11:00 pm deadline.

Why did it end like this?

There were no Saturday winners of tonight’s $400 million Mega Millions jackpot, which will be drawn again next week on Monday. This weekend’s drawing was only one of three chances for players to win some portion of Friday’s enormous $1.6 billion jackpot, which is shared among winners in each of 24 states that sell tickets. To win even a single dollar in tonight’s drawing, players had to pick numbers between 1 and 56 plus an additional number between 1 and 46 from a separate pool (each combination is known as a play). In total, there were 292.2 million possible play combinations. Saturday's drawing was unusual because it drew from two different pools: 9 digits from one pool and 10 digits from another.

Will the jackpot go up?

The biggest winner in Saturday’s powerball draw was no one—the pot of $400 million that has been collecting interest for two months remains unclaimed. Powerball officials will continue to roll over money, increasing chances that an individual could win big before time runs out. The next powerball draw is on Monday, with a pot estimated at $410 million.
