Who Owns the Most Bitcoins?

A lot of people ask themselves Who owns the most Bitcoins? or How many Bitcoin millionaires are there? The short answer to that question is that nobody really knows because it’s almost impossible to track everyone down and find out. Many of the earliest adopters of Bitcoin still own their coins, but they also like to fly under the radar as well, so they don’t often share their wealth or even their names with the public.

The Winklevoss Twins

In 2012, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss—the Harvard twins who Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg famously (and allegedly) swiped their idea for—applied to create a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF). The filing quoted a report by Coinometrics showing that they owned 1% of all bitcoins in circulation at that time. Since then, they’ve remained active in Bitcoin. They currently own around $65 million worth of cryptocurrency through Gemini, their digital-currency exchange.

Dr. Craig Wright

While most people have heard of bitcoin, not many people have met anyone who actually owns some. The cryptocurrency is a new type of money that’s being used more and more as we move toward a cashless society. So, what better place to find someone who knows about bitcoin than at a cryptocurrency convention? When I attended BTC Miami 2017 in April, I got a chance to speak with one of its most famous owners—Dr. Craig Wright. If you haven’t heard of him before, he’s often referred to as Satoshi Nakamoto, which means he may be one of only a few hundred people who own more bitcoins than you do.

Bobby Lee

In total, Bitcoin's first angel investor owns about 30% of all existing bitcoins. Despite that, his net worth is not known. Lee has been involved in many startups over his career. Bobby worked as a software engineer and senior project manager at Yahoo! and Nokia before co-founding a startup with his brother Charlie called BTC China. While Bobby has had success in Silicon Valley, he has been unable to penetrate China's business world because he is ethnically Chinese.

Satoshi's 1 million Bitcoins

At least one person in the world owns more than a million bitcoins. Satoshi Nakamoto, bitcoin's anonymous creator, is estimated to have mined one million bitcoins (about $1.4 billion today) by mining in 2009 before disappearing from public view. It’s unclear how many of those coins he still has, but it’s likely that his stash remains untouched as it would be nearly impossible to move without attracting attention.
